Renan Martins, Dø√∑ C@K∑: SATURNO, A FESTA!

Porto-based Brazilian choreographer Renan Martins creates his frst full evening solo performance in dialogue with DJ Dø√∑ C@K∑ and with the dramaturgical support of Colline Etienne.

Porto-based Brazilian choreographer Renan Martins creates his frst full evening solo performance in dialogue with DJ Dø√∑ Ç@K∑ and with the dramaturgical support of Colline Etienne.

SATURNO, A FESTA! is built around the Return of Saturn. An astrological transit mainly known for its intense and transformational power, both psychologically and spiritually.

Renan Martins creates a fictional clubbing situation where pop music is the engine for movement. He presents himself as Saturnian channel through which different personas, stories and pop references are expressed. Through constant and slow morphing, he travels back and forth from personal traumas to MTV music videos, from folk dances to dramatically charged images.
The dance here is offered at such slow tempo, that the space between movement and music becomes so dense you could almost grab it.

Karine Ponties: SAME SAME

Tereza Ondrova and Petra Tejnorova in an unexpected duo under the direction of Franco-Belgian choreographer Karine Ponties.

Tereza Ondrova and Petra Tejnorova in an unexpected duo under the direction of Franco-Belgian choreographer Karine Ponties.

A heron falling to pieces, trussed up in its feathers and sitting on sticks. A snake eagle swirling in large, paced circles before it melts. That is their wild side.

Nothing defines human beings better than their disposition to accomplish absurd acts in order to obtain results that are just as improbable. In a world where reason is a nice façade, the bursting in of non-sense brings us to face our relationship with normalcy and allows us to open up to unbeaten paths.

Somewhere between burn out and brown out, two women, exposed to each other like a palindrome in a distorting mirror, lose their direction and rekindle with their wild animal.

KARINE PONTIES
Artistic director of Dame de Pic, choreographer, performer, Karine Ponties has created close to fourty dance pieces. Her work is characterised by a flair for the absurd, exploring intimacy and interlacing relationships.

« Dance by choreographer Karine Ponties rejects gratuitous aesthetics and heightens often bizarre stories without colouring them too heavily. Certainly an expedition to be undertaken refuting all clichés. »
Rosita Boisseau – Telerama Magazine

LUCIA KAŠIAROVÁ, PETER ŠAVEL, TOMÁŠ VTÍPIL: EAU DE VIE / (MO)MENTAL DANCE

Two dancers and one musician research the rules of an event, which are ceaselessly changing.

The condition for creating this event is a group, space and the will to experience something together. The moment changes according to the group and space. Two dancers and one musician research the rules of an event, which are ceaselessly changing. The only certainty are the inspirations by Frida Kahlo, Japanese geishas, samurais and haiku. Eau de Vie is a journey. A journey via the others towards ourselves and vice versa.

Concept, performed by: Lucia Kašiarová, Peter Šavel

Live music: Tomáš Vtípil

Boys Who Like To Play With Dolls

Welcome in the fantasy world in which the masculine and feminine principle may not be the same as a man and a woman.

The society instills us from childhood gender stereotypes. Pink is for girls, cars are for boys, girls play with dolls and boys do not cry. Gender – the sexuality of personality – is much more than a biological phenomenon a social phenomenon. The essence of what it means being a man or a woman is not based solely on the amount of estrogen or testosterone in the body, but is basically the result of the social influence or decision, education, process of socialization.

Welcome in the fantasy world in which the masculine and feminine principle may not be the same as a man and a woman. The project results from a creative meeting of two distinctive choreographers and performers who have met in the successful project Much More Than Nothing. Movement and dance become in this project a means to express the contrast between the expression of body and soul, between genetic givens and social prejudices in an attempt to challenge the various social stereotypes and explore the theme of gender purely physically.

Running time: 40 minutes

Premiere: 17.5. 2015, Studio ALTA, Praha

Acknowledgements: Total Theatre Award Nomination, Amnesty International – Freedom of Expression Award 2015, Priority Companies List 2014 by Aerowaves, Dance Piece of the Year, Dancers of the Year 2014

Festival presentation: APAP/NYC 2015, Edinburgh Fringe 2015, Arc for Dance Festival Athens 2015, Diversia Festival Kostroma 2014, Spring Forward 2014 – Umea (SWE), TANEC PRAHA etc.

“Czech dancers Ondrová and Savel are itching to begin – illustrated with body markings reminiscent of pre surgery diagrams and unspecified tribal symbols, these remarkable performers morph between genders, catwalk strutting with dexterity and tragic desperation. Polyphonic ecclesiastical music suggests devotion to the church of designers label, the Me generation. A sudden disintegration into snarling feral canines evolves like the ascent of (wo) man, achieving not wisdom, but a talent for tacky disco dancing. There is a calm moment when they sit amongst us in a bid for belonging but their crisis of confusion seduces them back on the stage and we are serenaded with weekly sung hymn to high Priest(esses) of Fragile Identity. Magnificent.”

Morag Deyes for Spring Forward Festival

„With a great sense of humour Czech duo Tereza Ondrová and Peter Savel strut, stamp and shuffle their way across the stage in a wildly divers work that questions the absurdity of gender stereotypes. Mimmicking gestures and walks they transition smoothly between resisting and conforming to preset notions, before morphing into label less, undefined souls. A quick descent into animalism provides a raw investigation of our natural state of being as they take on the physicality of gorillas and wild dogs. (…)“

As Long As Holding Hands

A confrontation of ideas about the ideal relationship and the reality of what it means to truly build a romantic relationship shaped into an expressive, bodily image.

“They got married and lived together till death did them part.”

In their latest project the Czech-Slovak duo of creators have embarked on a journey of discovery of various forms of romantic relationships which know no obstacles of age or gender. Two people, two bodies, two separate identities fighting for love and exploring the boundaries of humility and loss of identity, dependence and sharing, honesty and deceit, love and hate. A confrontation of ideas about the ideal relationship and the reality of what it means to truly build a romantic relationship shaped into an expressive, bodily image.

The movement between Tereza and Peter arises from constant communication between “you and I” in harmony and dissent, both gracefully and awkwardly. With humour and passion, open to one another and for one another, they embark together with the audience on a journey into relationships. Each seemingly hopeless situation is an impetus for returning to the question: Do you still want to hold my hand?

The project is an international co-production by Tanec Praha (CZ), NorrlandsOperan Umeå (SWE), Centre Chorégraphique National Roubaix – Ballet du Nord (FR) and Plesni Teater Ljubljana (SLO).

Reviews:

As Long As Holding Hands is probably the most entertaining work about love in the field of expressional dance.”

Dominik Melichar, 22. 6. 2015, Divadelní noviny

“We can only hear the breathing of two individuals who accurately control their bodies and in the partner´s teamwork don´t know any taboos. Their dance is full of subtle nuances, small motions that stress the efforts in their partnership. The aggression is substituted by humor, rapid running is substituted by stopping. The intertwining bodies are shrouded by the purple light, and Tereza Ondrová and Peter Šavel really can´t be held responsible for our imagination. Not even after they spend long minutes by doing something between passionate kissing and mouth-to-mouth resuscitation.”

Kristina Soukupová, 22. 6. 2015, Taneční aktuality.cz

“The performance As Long As Holding Hands inventively deals with a topic, which one couldn´t even hope to see adapted unusually. Moreover, it does so with ease, humor and self-irony, which many representatives of alternative theatre lack.”

Vojtěch Poláček, 26. 6. 2015, kulturissimo.cz
